With the Lakers making headlines this season due to all their recent trades, I wanted to do some analysis on the overall number of trades that have occurred so far this season and see which teams are making the most moves.
I pulled some data from Wikipedia for all the trades that have occurred so far, both in free agency and regular trades, and used Power BI to visualize the results.
Overall, it looks like the Brooklyn Nets and the LA Lakers are the ones making the most moves in the league (both combining for 20% of all the trades). The Nets have 4 players acquired through trades with other teams, and 4 players acquired through free agency. Interestingly, the Lakers have all their players acquired through free agency, with 4 of those being undrafted players in 2018.
Check out the Power BI report below to focus on specific teams, what players were traded, and view the timeline of when each trade occurred.
Updated 7/25/18 – Added trades from 7/23-7/25.
Visuals Used
I used the Image Timeline visual in this report to leverage the use of team logos and plot them over the time that each trade occurred.
Pros: Easy to use. Good way to display events with images. Works best with data that spans across multiple years.
Cons: Doesn’t work well with images that use https. Very limited formatting options, especially the date display.
For displaying the data, I used a Stacked Bar Chart, Matrix (for grouping all trades within a team logo), and Cards.
